Come to the Feldenkrais Center to improve the quality of
your life!
Whether you want to improve your flexibility and
coordination, find better balance, reduce pain,
or overcome old habits that may be causing you stress
and fatigue, the Feldenkrais Method®
can help.
The Feldenkrais Method
teaches you how to reconnect with your
natural abilities to move, think, and feel.
It helps you release old habits.
You'll find increased range of motion,
greater flexibility and coordination, and
more graceful, efficient movement.
Regardless of how you
spend your day--sitting in traffic or working on your computer; swinging a golf
club or playing the violin; recovering from injury or trying to speak again
after a stroke--the Feldenkrais Method offers a safe, gentle way to:
Internationally recognized, the method is built on decades
of research in physics, biomechanics, learning theory, and human development.
The Feldenkrais Method works for everybody--regardless of age and physical ability.
Not a medical diagnosis or treatment,
the Feldenkrais Method allows you to learn new ways of
experiencing your self-organization and self-image through the use of
gentle movement sequences along with their sensory, emotional, and mental
dimensions. It's an educational model that offers tremendous benefits to
those who suffer from occasional aches and pains or those whose movements
are limited by accident, injury, or age. Doctors, physical therapists,
and other medical practitioners refer people to the Feldenkrais Method,
knowing that it is gentle, safe, and beneficial.
Smithsonian Magazine reported that the method teaches "subtle exercises that appear to help invalids, athletes and everyone else to function at a higher level". CBS News reported that the method "teaches the importance of posture and body movement" and can help you avoid the "surgical knife" for ongoing pain. Andrew Weil wrote, "I have long been intrigued by this subtle form of retraining the nervous system, which I currently recommend to patients whose movement has been restricted by injury, cerebral palsy, stroke, fibromyalgia, or chronic pain....I also believe that the Feldenkrais Method can help older people achieve greater range of motion and flexibility, and help all of us feel more comfortable in our bodies." Margaret Mead wrote, "This is the most sophisticated and effective method I have seen for the prevention and reversal of deterioration of function." Science Digest reported that "The Feldenkrais Method has had remarkable success in a range of chronic complaints ranging from the debilitating, such as cerebral palsy or paralysis, to the merely nagging, such as stiff necks, tension headaches or the blahs." The Feldenkrais
Method is taught in two different ways:
Functional Integration® (FI) consists of private
sessions for individuals. During FI sessions you remain comfortably dressed. The lessons
are usually performed with you lying down but sometimes they take place in sitting
or standing. Through gentle touch and sometimes verbal cues, you'll
explore new ways to achieve optimal neuromuscular organization.
Awareness through Movement® (ATM) consists of private,
semi-private, or group sessions. ATM sessions take place with you comfortably
dressed, lying on the floor, sitting, or standing. The instructor verbally
directs you through a series of simple, easy movements through which you find
feelings of lightness, strength, and balance to take into all parts of your
life. People from all walks of life use Feldenkrais to create positive, lasting changes in their movement, posture, self-image, flexibility and comfort. It is safe. It is effective. Best of all, it's available to anyone regardless of age or physical condition.
